The Garden City Police Department was established in 1951. At that time, there was one officer who also served as the Chief of Police. Prior to 1951, the City Marshall functioned as the Police Chief/Officer. Over the years, the department gradually expanded as Garden City annexed surrounding properties into the city.
The department has enjoyed considerable stability within the senior command staff. Since its humble beginnings, the Garden City Police Department has had only eight Chiefs of Police, which has contributed immensely to the success of the department. Two officers in the department currently have more than thirty years of service, four have over twenty, three have over fifteen years, and two have over ten years of service.

The Garden City Police Department operates 24 hours per day, seven days per week, to ensure round-the-clock quality, responsive law enforcement to support our community in any given situation.
