A. SUPERVISOR
The Evidence Custodian reports directly to the Administrative Captain.
B. SUMMARY
This position involves the responsibility of maintaining police records, transcribing incident reports, and the security of the department’s property and evidence room. Record maintenance, transcription, data entry, and customer service skills are duties performed that may require independent judgment in completing tasks. Duties are usually repetitive and routine in nature.
C. MAJOR DUTIES
1. Receives and handles calls from the general public regarding police incidents.
2. Assists the public by duplicating police reports, answering incoming calls from the general public, and referring them to the appropriate staff.
3. Prepares condemnation letters.
4. Ensures the operation and security of the Department’s Property and Evidence Room.
5. Account for all property and evidence received for storage.
6. Record all property and evidence received for storage.
7. Ensure a separate, secure area for property which requires added protection such as money, precious metals, jewelry and gemstones, weapons, narcotics, and dangerous drugs.
8. Maintain personal possession of the Repository keys.
9. Ensure that all items that are logged are packaged correctly and in the appropriate manner, to include exercising the right to refuse items not properly logged.
10. Ensure that all evidence is purged in accordance with the applicable time frame.
11. Other duties may be assigned.
D. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
There are no direct supervisory responsibilities involved in this position, yet in the absence of the Administrative Captain this employee has authority to handle certain situations as deemed necessary.

Ability to deal with a variety of factors and situations and to solve practical problems. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
